The most precious collection of brooches we've ever come across! This particular brooch features a collection of vibrant red blooms, embroidered with silk onto a natural off-white fabric. The brooch is set in a silver-coloured rope-effect metal frame, with a plastic transparent film protecting the creation. 7cm in height. C-type clasp to close, with roll-over catch to secure.

The embroidery is, however, a machine-made rather than hand-made piece and was created as a free gift with cigarettes in the early days of promotional advertising. These small silk embroideries were collected and then mounted into albums and, sometimes, jewellery!

In good condition, scuffs and scratches to the metal as expected of a brooch this age.

Embroidered and hand-made brooches were popularised during the 'make-do-and-mend' years of world war two and they remained popular throughout the 1940's, 1950's and 1960's. You could also buy kits with threads, pre-printed designs on fabric and the necessary mounts to complete your piece of jewellery.
